Either Yesterday or Today

Posted by peanutbutterblog on April 3, 2008

I’ve been reading conflicting media reports that say it’s National Peanut Butter Day today. or maybe it was yesterday. Either way, it’s a cause for celebration. One article pointed out that “in Canada”, PB&J Is referred to as “blood and mud”. Is this true? I hate it.

Has anyone out there heard of PB2? It’s a low-cal powdered form of Peanut Butter that has had all of the oil squeezed out of of it. Peanut butter powder seems like a somewhat blasphemous form of PB, but I guess as long as there aren’t artificial ingredients or preservatives added, it might be somewhat useful for certain baking and cooking projects.

I tried some really great natural peanut butter on Tuesday. Crazy Richards Chunky, of course. Based on the color, this peanut butter is made with skinless peanuts, and somehow manages to stay pretty creamy and resists separation fairly well. Crazy Richard’s also seems to be the official peanut butter of Men’s Health Magazine. There is no organic version available.

I’m on a quest to try Minnesotan Parkers Family Farms peanut butter, after reading one man’s claims that it’s the best peanut butter in the world. There are apparently many other people who agree. I have this address for Parkers Family Farms:
 Parkers Farm
420 93rd Ave NW
Minneapolis, MN 55433-5802
I just checked out their website and it looks like the peanut butter is only available at Wal Mart and related stores, which there aren’t many of here in Brooklyn. Maybe next time I drive through the midwest?
In closing, here is the late great Shel Silverstein:

Peanut-Butter Sandwich

    by Shel Silverstein (1932-1999)

I’ll sing you a story of a silly young king
Who played with the world at the end of a string,
But he only loved one single thing –
And that was just a peanut-butter sandwich.

His scepter and his royal gowns,
His regal throne and golden crowns
Were brown and sticky from the mounds
And drippings from each peanut-butter sandwich.

His subjects all were silly fools
For he had passed a royal rule
That all that they could learn in school
Was how to make a peanut-butter sandwich.

He would not eat his sovereign steak,
He scorned his soup and kingly cake,
And told his courtly cook to bake
An extra-sticky peanut-butter sandwich.

And then one day he took a bite
And started chewing with delight,
But found his mouth was stuck quite tight
From that last bite of peanut-butter sandwich.

His brother pulled, his sister pried,
The wizard pushed, his mother cried,
“My boy’s committed suicide
From eating his last peanut-butter sandwich!”

The dentist came, and the royal doc.
The royal plumber banged and knocked,
But still those jaws stayed tightly locked.
Oh darn that sticky peanut-butter sandwich!

The carpenter, he tried with pliers,
The telephone man tried with wires,
The firemen, they tried with fire,
But couldn’t melt that peanut-butter sandwich.

With ropes and pulleys, drills and coil,
With steam and lubricating oil –
For twenty years of tears and toil –
They fought that awful peanut-butter sandwich.

Then all his royal subjects came.
They hooked his jaws with grapplin’ chains
And pulled both ways with might and main
Against that stubborn peanut-butter sandwich.

Each man and woman, girl and boy
Put down their ploughs and pots and toys
And pulled until kerack! Oh, joy –
They broke right through that peanut-butter sandwich.

A puff of dust, a screech, a squeak –
The king’s jaw opened with a creak.
And then in voice so faint and weak –
The first words that they heard him speak
Were, “How about a peanut-butter sandwich?”

Conveyor Belts

Posted by peanutbutterblog on March 10, 2008

Inspired by the life-changing Mr.Rogers segment (or was it Sesame Street?) at the Crayon factory, I realized that a glimpse inside a peanut butter factory would definitely be a magical thing. There might be peanuts being shelled, rattling along a conveyor belt, getting crushed or ground up in some kind of gigantic crusher machine, stirred up all creamy, injected into old-timey glass bottles. Oh it’s just too much. If only a Crayola Factory quality video of a peanut butter factory excisted…

Oh wait:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Right! I like that bit about trans fats and natural peanut butters (the best best).Oddly, there is a second copy of this same video floating around online, with the same script, narrated by a nice lady-voice. The options are open so you can take your pick.

While searching for peanut butter factory footage, I ran across this gem(?) featuring some comedian named Adam who I saw on Tyra the other day ( I KNOW. Vaseline, anyone? ) and looks remarkably like my friend Brian.

Two church-goin’ folks named Kyle and Frances spent “date night” canning peanut butter by hand at their local Houston, Texas Peanut Butter Factory. In that posting there is talk of a BYU creamery. It turns out there is a very strong connection between the Church of Latter Day Saints and the production of peanut butter, all in conjunction with church-related humanitarian efforts. The Latter Day Saints Cannery in Houston cranks out 95,000 jars of it’s own peanut butter annually. Here’s a look into the LDS Cannery on a busy night:

Alternate Uses of Peanut Butter

Posted by peanutbutterblog on March 10, 2008

After reading about a recent violent peanut butter vandalism attack, I see that the situation surrounding the butter bust is pretty unfortunate. Still, I can’t decide if the perpetrator gets points for a unique approach or minus points for wasting good Skippy.

In more feel-good news, City on a Hill Press brings us a fun alternative use for peanut butter – shaving cream. Apparently this a relatively wide spread alterna-use for pb. who knew?

DIY blog discusses peanut butter’s ability to remove gum from a carpet. Anybody have a tip for removing peanut butter from a carpet?

In closing:

Later this week, in honor of National Peanut Month (March) and the revival of PB BLOG, there will be a very special post with personal anecdotes from other peanut butter aficionados we happen to know and love.

Peter Pan Recalled!

Posted by peanutbutterblog on March 12, 2007

I’m sorry I’ve been a little MIA lately, but I am back. I have gone through at least 3 jars of peanut butter as well as an almond butter since my last post so I have some catching up to do.

In the mean time, Peter Pan peanut butter has been linked to a salmonella outbreak. The FDA is recalling peanut butter by Peter Pan as well as Wal- Mart’s brand “Great Value” that has been bought as early as October 2004.

Oops! Giving Peanut Butter a bad name.
